Jake Rowley

I am regularly instructed in cases involving issues of insurance law, particularly those arising out of car insurance.  I have experience of dealing with s.151/152 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 issues, Article 75 declarations/status, uninsured and untraced drivers, and other matters involving the Motor Insurer's Bureau.

My recent work in this area has included:

  • Advising on the development of the wording of the various Motor Insurers’ Bureau Untraced Drivers Agreements in force since 1972, specifically whether that wording permitted the recovery of interest on damages;
  • The interpretation of various insurance contract clauses;
  • Issues of agency arising in an insurance contract context.

My approach

I aim to provide you with cost-effective, expert legal assistance for your dispute.  I am hardworking, diligent and approchable and always strive to secure my client the very best result in their case.  No matter how 'big' or 'small' your case might seem I understand that it is important to you and I will work hard to try to get the outcome you want.  I aim to respond promptly to your questions and queries so that you are not left waiting.  I understand the stresses of legal proceedings and aim to help relieve some of that pressure with helpful guidance, advice and my experience of the litigation and court processes.

If I consider your case may be suitable for Direct Access then in the first instance I prefer to speak to you, preferably on the telephone, to get a better understanding of the issues in your case, its strengths and weaknesses, and what you hope to achieve.  If your case is then to progress further with me, I would hope to meet you in person at my Chambers so that we can discuss matters in greater detail.

I hope ordinarily to work on a 'fixed fee' basis for particular pieces of work/tasks so that there are no unexpected surprises - you will know precisely how much it is going to cost, in advance, and you will know exactly what I am going to be doing for you.

About me

I have a strong common law practice with a particular focus on personal injury, commercial, insurance, sports and education law.

Originally from Plymouth I moved to London to study law at King's College, London.  I was called to the Bar in 2011 by Lincoln's Inn, having been awarded a major scholarship to assist with my studies.  I completed my final year of training to become a barrister at Farrar's Building, where I remain as a tenant in private practice.

Before finishing my training at Farrar's Building I spent six months as a legal researcher at Peters & Peters Solicitors, one of the UK’s leading boutique litigation firms, carrying out various roles with particular focus on the legal areas of extradition, bribery and corruption, EU sanctions, anti-money laundering and international asset recovery.

I also spent 18 months as a 'County Court Advocate' appearing daily in the County Courts and the High Court dealing with a broad range of matters including mortgage repossessions; return of goods hearings; charging order applications; various personal insolvency matters including bankruptcy petitions and applications to annul bankruptcy orders; and residential and commercial landlord and tenant disputes.

I am a former international fencer having won a Junior Commonwealth Games gold medal representing England. I also fenced for Great Britain at the Junior World Championships and at numerous Junior World Cups.  I am an internationally qualified fencing referee and at the time my qualification I was the youngest international Sabre referee in the world; I continue to officiate both home and abroad at all ages levels.

Professional & academic

I studied for my law degree at King's College, London.  After graduating I undertook the Bar Professional Training Course at the College of Law, London being graded "Outstanding" (the top mark) including receiving the top mark for the Opinion Writing examination (95%).
