Trevor Drury

I am able to advise on all kinds of contractual disputes for domestic or corporate clients with particular expertise in construction, property, housing, energy and infrastructure industry sector, having had a career within that industry to Executive Director level before practising as a barrister. I am also an adjudicator and accredited mediator.

My approach

I am very thorough, well organised and flexible to meet my client’s needs. I am use to dealing directly with domestic and corporate clients having been a consultant for many years prior to becoming a barrister.

I am prepared to travel to my clients, although I would charge the costs of travel.

Costs: I usually set fixed fees, so that you know exactly how much you will have to pay. I charge £350 per hour plus VAT and so any fixed fee will be calculated on that basis. The cost of a conference starts from £700 plus VAT for up to two hours but a higher fee may be quoted depending on the volume of material to review.

My work

I have pursued and helped defend many disputes over the last 20 years as a dispute resolution practitioner from relatively small disputes to multi-million pound claims on large construction projects and power stations. I have also been appointed as an expert witness in quantity surveying and project management.

I have represented clients seeking payment in numerous adjudications and have defended clients in adjudications brought against them.

I have recently provided a written opinion to a client on a final account settlement concerning a school building, the liability of the builder for defects and how much the client should pay in order to obtain a good settlement, whilst protecting its position if further latent defects arise. On the basis of my advice, a settlement was reached in this long- standing dispute. I was then asked to draft the settlement agreement for signing by the parties. A very good result for my client.

In another dispute, I had to defend a client who had suddenly found itself in two adjudications on two separate housing projects simultaneously. The total in dispute being a large six figure sum for outstanding monies on a final account.  I managed to almost halve the amount to be paid. Again, a very good result for my client.

About me

I was called to the Bar in 2011 but I have over 35 years’ experience within the building and construction industry as a quantity surveyor, project manager, claims and dispute resolution consultant. I have worked for both construction companies and consultancies. In my career, I became an Executive Director of an international construction dispute resolution consultancy and have run my own consultancy specialising in expert witness and dispute resolution for 14 years. I have also been a group board member of a housing association.

I have over 20 years’ experience in construction dispute resolution and I joined 12 Old Square chambers in 2017 having undertaken my pupillage there.

The benefit to my clients is that in addition to being a barrister, I am a very experienced building and construction professional, being both a Chartered Surveyor, a Chartered Construction Manager and Project Manager.

I am married with two sons both in their twenties. In my spare time I enjoy watching football, Formula 1 motor racing and I am a volunteer signalman on the West Somerset Railway, a preserved heritage line. I enjoy good food, the countryside and visiting historic buildings with my wife.
