I am a South African trained barrister (advocate), I have been in my own practice for many years, including working with all types of clients. I have been interviewed on Sky News. I specifically offer the following specialist legal skills:

My approach

I offer a direct and honest approach with clear explanations so you know what to expect legally. Surprise is never a good thing...

I offer a brief no charge telephonic consultatiion for piece of mind.

My fees are fixed but an hourly rate can be agreed if the client prefers this option. Sean is happy to discuss. you his fees with you and appreciates that many people are on a limited budget.

I believe that only lawyers benefit from going to Court. If I can settle a matter instead if going to Court this is my first approach. However if litigation is the only approach I have a no holds barred policy. I defend my client's rights and position vigorously.

What clients say

When I discovered that a previous employee had embezzled significant funds from my company, I had to turn to the Civil Courts to recover them. However, I immediately found that the process was far from simple and wrapped in complex processes and procedures for which there was little guidance and of which I knew nothing. I was advised to turn to Direct Access Barristers to find help and I engaged Sean Middleton. Sean's help was invaluable. He advised me of the whole Civil Court process, which documents I needed to submit, explained their legally-phrased wording and helped me to complete them. He helped me prepare and document the evidence and the witness statements, all in the Court's required format - including meeting the Court's undeclared deadline for submitting costs! Such was the strength of the case that Sean helped me construct, the defendant settled just before the case was due. Sean then proposed that I formalise the settlement with a Tomlin Order which he prepared for the Court. Without Sean's friendly help and advice, I know I would have struggled with the whole process and probably failed in my endeavours to recover the monies. I highly recommend him. SW 2020

We are most grateful for obtaining the freezing injunction in the RCJ, today…our firm could have been financially crippled

Sean, thank you so much for the way you dealt with my case and justice prevails again -'a worthy win'! - Louise Ball (lay client) I had the honour and the real pleasure to meet Sean Middleton, and he did a fantastic job by defending my case in court. I want to take this opportunity of thanking him for all he has done in fetching my claim to a very satisfactory result. Thank you Sean for your help and assistance. - Xavier Jahouel (lay client), Porvair Filtration Group Limited Sean [Middleton] represented us in a hearing to obtain a possession order for a property that we own, after the tenant had refused to leave following issuing of notices. Despite the tenant pleading hardship and asking for an extended period to vacate, Sean was able to put forward a very good case for the period to be kept to the minimum allowable. The judge went on to grant possession within 14 days (the best outcome that we could have expected). Thank you Sean for your assistance. - Justin Ives (lay client), property matter I read your profile before actually meeting you and was very impressed. On meeting you at the Court you put me at ease with your knowledge and humour and carefully explained how you intended to conduct the hearing and fetch my claim to a successful conclusion. Both myself and my solicitor were very impressed with the obvious thorough preparation you had done and the professional way this was carried out. I take this opportunity of thanking you for all you have done in fetching my claim to a very satisfactory result. It was a real pleasure for both my daughter and I to meet you and I am very grateful that I had you representing me. Take care and my best wishes. - Clarissa Stopp (lay client) I have had the pleasure of working with Sean Middleton on a possession hearing in Croydon County Court and regardless of the distance Sean had to travel from, he remained committed and did an excellent job in ensuring that eviction of our client was not successful. An outcome that delighted the client. - Deji Sijuwade, Senior Partner, Alfred James & Co Just wanted to pass on my sincere thanks for representing my young son throughout his court hearing on New Years Eve. Thanks for firstly giving up your time during the holidays, it was really nice to meet you and following the success of the case my son is now much happier and that he was also in good hands. It's not often you feel at ease when attending court cases or hearings and your professionalism and dedication made our case smooth and the paperwork was all taken care of by you and your good lady. I hope that my younger daughters case is dealt by yourself too. Thank you once again and I would thoroughly recommend you to anyone. A very efficient and well managed case from my perspective and I could not have been provided with a better service I am sure. - Taffos O'Hagan (lay client) Thanks [Sean Middleton] for all your hard work and professionalism throughout. Excellent job and a great result. - Emma Dion, Next Legal Department When we left the court we went back to work to tell everybody how brilliant you [Sean Middleton] had been, even though we felt like we had put been through the mill! without your expert professionalism and clear knowledge of the law I am not sure that I could believe in the wonderful British legal system…having just read your story I know that we were meant to have you as our Counsel that day as I can quite see that you have all the necessary qualities determination and legal skills to ride out such opposition and triumph over adversity…once again, Sean, many, many thanks, you were just terrific! - Tom & Sharon Dowds (lay clients), road traffic matter Just a quick e-mail to say thank you [Sean Middleton] for successfully bringing my insurance claim to a successful close. You showed that you had read through my case notes and taken in what I said. You gave great advice during the short time that we had together before the hearing and explained everything that would happen in almost perfect order of what actually happened. All this together lead to a successful claim and a smooth hearing that I was comfortable and at ease throughout.

Sean Middleton is quite simply exceptional! I obviously can't go into detail, however a barrister which I had been working with for almost 6 months withdrew from the case 4 days before the hearing leaving me in a very difficult situation. After discussing the matter with Sean I was convinced that he was the representation that I needed and thankfully he took pity on me and agreed to represent me at very short notice. In the intervening 4 days Sean worked miracles and the matter was settled on mutually agreeable terms prior to the hearing. Sean is very straight talking, a man of action and above all else he looks after his client's interest from the outset. It's a shame when you find someone who is so accomplished in their field but hope not to have need of their services on a regular basis, needless to say I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Sean and have in fact already done so. James Bethell Lay Client, Jul 2015 I was extremely impressed with every aspect of Mr. Middleton's work. He handled my case so efficiently and finding him was like a weight lifted off my shoulders.
