Jake Rowley

I have a strong and busy personal injury practice encompassing the full spectrum of personal injury work.  I have significant experience of claims arising out of road traffic accidents, as well as those arising in other contexts, including accidents at work, accidents in public places, occupier’s liability cases and claims brought against local authorities under the Highways Act.

I am instructed to appear in Court on an almost daily basis, with ranging financial values, both at trial and in the full range of interim hearings.  I have experience of dealing with cases involving allegations of fraud and/or dishonesty and 'Low Velocity Impact' type collisions.  I am also instructed to attend approval hearings for children and those lacking capacity, disposal hearings to assess the sum recoverable by a claimant, and Stage 3 assessment of damages hearings.

I am regularly asked to draft proceedings on behalf of claimants or to respond by way of a written defence.

I also provide written advice in all areas of personal injury litigation, whether that be the prospects of success, matters of evidence, issues of procedure, or the likely financial value of a claim.

My more recent work has included:

  • Representing the successful claimant, a delivery driver, following an accident at work brought against an NHS Trust under various Health & Safety regulations;
  • Advising and settling the schedule of loss in a case (worth in excess of £100,000) following an accident at work suffered by a paramedic;
  • Advising the claimant on the value of his claim and whether an offer made by the defendant to settle should be accepted (£50,000);
  • Acting on behalf of the successful claimant in respect of a fall caused by standing water on the premises of the defendant's convenience store brought pursuant to the Occupier’s Liability Act;
  • Successfully defending a ‘highways tripping’ claim on behalf of a local council.

I am also familiar with, and have provided written advice on, the operation of the Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992.

I have a particular interest in cases involving child claimants.    I have published an article examining and analysing changes relating to the Civil Procedure Rules as it pertains to the recovery of certain fees charged by solicitors out of children's damages entitled, “Recovery of CFA Success Fees and Children” which was subsequently turned into a two-part podcast by CPDcast.com.  I have more recently written an updated article on this topic entitled, “Jackson’s Children: Recoverability of Success Fees in Child Claimant Cases”, which is published in the Personal Injury Brief Update Law Journal.

About me

I have a strong common law practice with a particular focus on personal injury, commercial, insurance, sports and education law.

Originally from Plymouth I moved to London to study law at King's College, London.  I was called to the Bar in 2011 by Lincoln's Inn, having been awarded a major scholarship to assist with my studies.  I completed my final year of training to become a barrister at Farrar's Building, where I remain as a tenant in private practice.

Before finishing my training at Farrar's Building I spent six months as a legal researcher at Peters & Peters Solicitors, one of the UK’s leading boutique litigation firms, carrying out various roles with particular focus on the legal areas of extradition, bribery and corruption, EU sanctions, anti-money laundering and international asset recovery.

I also spent 18 months as a 'County Court Advocate' appearing daily in the County Courts and the High Court dealing with a broad range of matters including mortgage repossessions; return of goods hearings; charging order applications; various personal insolvency matters including bankruptcy petitions and applications to annul bankruptcy orders; and residential and commercial landlord and tenant disputes.

I am a former international fencer having won a Junior Commonwealth Games gold medal representing England. I also fenced for Great Britain at the Junior World Championships and at numerous Junior World Cups.  I am an internationally qualified fencing referee and at the time my qualification I was the youngest international Sabre referee in the world; I continue to officiate both home and abroad at all ages levels.

Professional & academic

I studied for my law degree at King's College, London.  After graduating I undertook the Bar Professional Training Course at the College of Law, London being graded "Outstanding" (the top mark) including receiving the top mark for the Opinion Writing examination (95%).
