Art (Personal)

What legal issues should I be aware of?

Whether you are a collector, art dealer, gallery owner or have a private interest in art, you will need well informed legal advice to ensure your interests are best protected.

That legal advice will cover, among other things, confirming who owns the piece of art, authenticity, rightful claims and, perhaps, stolen and looted art. The sale and purchase of works of art also requires specialist legal knowledge. You may need to consider protecting the intellectual property value of your artwork. If you are leaving a valuable piece of art to someone else after you die, that will need to be carefully written into your Will. If you are in a dispute, your barrister will be able to advise you on the strength of your case and the right steps forward.

If there is an international dimension to your interest in art, for example, if you are importing a piece of art, there are more legal issues of which you should be aware. You may need to pay customs duties or other taxes. English law and regulations are often used to apply to international dealings.
