I graduated with first class honours in Business Law and obtained the prestigious postgraduate degree of Bachelor of Civil Law at Oxford University. I practised as a solicitor with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer before becoming a barrister in 1994. In 2015 I established Commercial Chambers.

I am recognised as a leading practitioner with both specialist expertise and substantial experience in a field that I describe as one of “commercial divorce” and which includes:

  • claims by shareholders for relief against unfairly prejudicial conduct of companies' affairs under section 994 Companies Act 2006
  • claims in respect of breaches of directors’ duties
  • partnership disputes
  • disputes between contracting parties
  • disputes arising from the break-down of business relations
  • claims by commercial agents

I am also an experienced CEDR trained mediator.

My work

I am happy either to agree fixed fees for specific pieces of work to be carried out (e.g. a fixed fee for a written or oral opinion/advice or for preparation, attendance and advocacy at the hearing of an application/a trial) or to agree that I should charge by reference to the time that a particular pice of work takes me to complete. When a fixed fee is agreed that fee will cover all of my services required to carry out the specific piece of work that I am instructed to deal with. If I am asked to carry out further work there will need to be a further agreement with regard to my fees for that further work. I calculate my fees by reference to an hourly rate of £350 (ex vat). I charge the same for my services whether I am instructed through a solicitor or directly by a client under the Direct Public Access scheme.

I do not usually accept work on a conditional fee basis.

A client may also have to pay solicitors’ fees or expert witnesses’ fees (if such services are required). Court fees will be payable if proceedings need to be issued. In appropriate cases there may be further costs associated with Alternative Dispute Resolution procedures (e.g. mediation). The extent of any such costs cannot reliably be estimated until the precise extent of those services has been identified in any particular case. I will be able to advise as to the extent of any such additional costs when fully appraised of the nature of the particular matter.
